Language and Literature

Literature and language compliment each other. Literature needs language as a medium to convey its message and language needs literature to show the beautiful side of it. During my secondary school days in a rural place in Kedah, I did not have the chance to learn literature. At that time, literature was only an elective component during the SPM examination and was not offered in my school. My only resources of literature were the books in the school library. Enrolling in the TESL programme in UPM had given me the opportunity to taste the richness of both literature and language. I had travelled to the era of Shakespeare and even enjoyed the works of our local writers. Yet, I’m craving for more. As an English teacher, my duty to impart the language and to expose the students’ to literature becomes clearer than ever. I do believe that I still have a long way to go in completing the duty that were bestowed upon me and I also know that a journey always starts with a single step.
